The A25 Midleton Road in Guildford was closed this morning (June 18) after a lorry crashed into the railway bridge carrying the London to Portsmouth mainline between Guildford and Woking.

The vehicle was travelling westbound when the top of the lorry struck the underside of the bridge at about 6am. A road sign gives the bridge height over the road as 4.5 metres or 15 feet.

The height retriction warning sign on the railway bridge over the A25 Midleton Road.

Trains were delayed but were using the bridge as normal again from 8am, according to Network Rail.

Surrey Police helped remove the lorry and the road was reopened by 11am.

Network Rail said it stopped trains as a precaution to allow for an inspection of the bridge.

A spokesperson said: “We thank passengers for their patience and understanding and apologise for the disruption this incident caused to their journeys.”
