The Surrey Sports Park was turned into a sea of pink today (Sunday, May 26) as Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life Guildford event was held at the venue for the first time.
Thousands took part in the two races that began at 11am and at 2pm. First over the line in the first race was Nicole James.
Speaking to Eagle Radio ahead of the event, Rachel Northover, the senior area event manager for Race for Life in this area said: “As a charity we’re always looking at giving our participants the best experience. We also want to make sure that our events cause people the least amount of inconvenience. Unfortunately, there were a few issues at Stoke Park [where the Guildford event had previously been held several times], just in terms of parking and the traffic that built up around the area.”
Race for Life started in 1994. Since then six million women have come together and raised more than £493 million for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work. It is the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event.
It is Cancer Research UK’s flagship event, with more than 230 events taking place across the country this year.
