There is a new craft beer and gin bar in Guildford town centre. The Kerrera Bar, in Jeffries Passage, opened in September 2022.

Owner Callum Stewart said: “We’re six months in and we’re are doing well. We’ve had lots of local support to try the different beers.

“We change the beers every couple of days, so there is a good chance you’ll find something new whenever you come in.”

He launched the bar with a popular pay it forward crowdfund and he has kept customers as a result.

One customer, Paul, said: “I was one of the crowd funders. For me it was a simple investment because it was a local business, not a big chain.

“I call Kerrera weird and wonderful, it’s unique. There’s a lot of stuff here that’s not otherwise available in the UK. It’s something different every time.

“I love the music, the atmosphere and the design.”

The bar is named after the tiny island in the Inner Hebrides. So, why set up in Guildford? Stewart said: “I have family connections with Guildford, my cousin is pleased I have opened a bar within walking distance. There’s lots happening in the town and we are part of that.”

All the staff I talked to were enthusiastic about the young, handsome Callum.

“He is an amazing boss, I feel very comfortable here, Callum is a great and really looks after us,” said Niamh Page, a student at the University of Surrey School of Veterinary Medicine but working part time in the bar.

“The clientele is lovely as well, lots of regulars. Everyone who comes in, always comes back.

“Our events like beer tastings are always sold out and popular.”

Rob and Alex, chatting over a beer after work on the way home, made a significant detour to Kerrera from the railway station. Rob said: “It’s worth the detour. A much better selection than most pubs, it’s got to be in the top two in Guildford.”

The upstairs area seats about 20 people and you can book it free of charge, which is brilliant.

Opening hours are Tuesday to Thursdays, 5pm to 10pm; Friday and Saturday, noon to 11pm and Sunday, noon to 8pm.
