Deep in the undergrowth of Surrey, a troop of design specialists have nested in a recently converted barn. Silverback ® – as in the gorilla – is the name of Malcolm Gilbertson’s team of designers and marketeers, who have roamed just over the border from Sussex to Surrey in their 10th year of trading.

They are marking the move with a distinctive new identity to celebrate what they do best: powerful, intelligent design.

Mal founded Silverback ® when his observation and personal experience of design agencies was that some of them fell short of his ethical standards of doing things properly, for the right reason, and treating staff well.

Silverbacks are distinctive, inquisitive and loyal, the qualities Mal wanted in his company and creative output – hence the name. Silverback ® specialise in brand strategy and visual identity, offering a full range of services including branding, creative, digital and copy.

The troop hasn’t changed much over the decade, just grown. The culture has always been based on the following principles: be bold, be genuine, be instinctive, be playful and work in collaboration – just like the gorilla!

A big part of the Silverback ® ethos is working collaboratively, as the creative partner to their clients. This has earned trust and loyalty, with several client relationships as old as the company.

When a male gorilla comes of age around 10-12 it matures from blackback to the distinctive ‘silverback’ colouring. As Silverback ® create distinctive identities for their clients, they felt they should demonstrate this by updating their own. The move to their stylish new offices seemed like the perfect opportunity to do this – it’s a way of showing potential clients that Silverback ® have earned their stripes and are ready for the next chapter.

The future looks bright for the Silverback ® troop: growing with their clients whilst forming new partnerships in the leafy surroundings of Surrey.
