Students at Guildford’s senior schools celebrated their A-level and AS results on Thursday (August 18).
Nationally, record numbers of UK university places have been offered, although A-level results saw a marginal fall in top grades for the fifth successive year.
The proportion of A* and A grades was 25.8%, down by 0.1% on last year. The pass rate of 98.1% remained the same.
The Ucas admissions services said 424,000 places have been offered, up by 3% on results day last year.
In Guildford, George Abbot School saw an improvement in students achieving the higher grades.
83 A* grades were achieved, which means 11.6% of the grades awarded to students were the A* grade and 22.4% of grades were A grades.
The school’s director of sixth-form studies, Kevin O’Sullivan, said: “This has been another excellent year at George Abbot.
“As a comprehensive sixth form our aim is to prepare students for the next stage of their lives. We pride ourselves on the development of the whole student.
“These results are just reward for the hard work and dedication with which our students have committed themselves to their studies.
“While following an ever more challenging curriculum, students are also encouraged to participate in many community and extra-curricular activities. In a shifting educational landscape our students have risen to the challenge and we are pleased to celebrate such success with them.”
At Guildford County School more than 60% of students achieved an A*-B, with 30% gaining an A* to A grade.
Overall, the school’s students enjoyed a pass rate of over 98%. 82% of all grades were A*- C grades.
Headteacher Jack Mayhew said: “Congratulations to students and to staff for their outstanding efforts in achieving these excellent A-level results.
“When you consider the inspiring breadth of our students’ achievements beyond the curriculum – in music, sport and charity work – today’s results are all the more impressive.
“We are also delighted with the results of the following AS students, Nick Brown who achieved a very impressive five A grades and those who achieved four A grades: Hannah Coles, Rachel Dauncey, Sam Goulden, Ed Hammersley and Joe Taylor.
At Guildford High School 34% of grades awarded were A*, with 97% of grades at A*-B. In a year group of 102, 67 students achieved three or more A*/A grades, with 17 students achieving three or more A* grades.
Headmistress Fiona Boulton said: “Our 2016 leavers are a special year group. Their creativity, individuality and spirit have just flourished and most importantly, they are unfailingly good company. These excellent results reflect not only their hard work, but also the exceptional teaching and support of our staff. We wish all the girls great success for the future.”
The Royal Grammar School achieved another outstanding set of A-level results as, from a cohort of 127 students, more than 78% of the grades were secured at A* or A grade and 72 boys achieved the accolade of a clean set of A* and A grades.
In total, 36% of all grades were A*, compared to the national average of approximately 8%.
The Headmaster, Dr Jon Cox, said: “At a time when the Olympics have showcased what can be achieved by talented individuals when they are subjected to the right conditioning, environment and coaching and who are willing then to inject their own passion, dedication and perseverance, in the same light I could not be more proud of the A-level results achieved by the RGS students.
“The gold standard A* grade denotes a consistent performance across the sixth form at the very highest level. Supported by inspirational and devoted staff, these results have allowed the boys to secure places on the most challenging courses at the leading universities in the country. Their excellent results are fully deserved and just reward for all their hard work.”
There was a 100% pass rate at A-level at Tormead School, with 90% A*-B and two thirds awarded A*/A.
Headmistress Christina Foord said: “The Class of 2016 has always been ambitious, determined and fun loving and I am delighted that the high expectations they and we had have been reached.
“The girls have made the most of all the opportunities available to them in all areas of school life, but have always put their academic pursuits first, working in close collaboration with the staff and in particular relishing the brand new library facilities and the extended study options in the restructured timetable.
“They will be the first to acknowledge the dedication, support and expertise of all who have taught them; and the staff in return know that the futures that await this outstanding group of young women are very well deserved and will be enjoyed to the full. We shall watch their progress with interest and pride.”
