Surrey County Council Elections – Debate On What Could Affect The Outcome

Published on: 8 Apr, 2021
Updated on: 10 Apr, 2021

The Surrey County Council elections on May 6 are less than five weeks away.

The Guildford Dragon NEWS will be covering the election with articles on the candidates and the issues, opinion pieces from the parties standing and, Covid restrictions permitting, live coverage of the election results.

As part of our coverage, we asked Professor Amelia Hadfield, head of the politics department at Surrey University, to talk with Dragon editor, Martin Giles and reporter, Hugh Coakley, about some of the factors that could affect the outcome.

Professor Hadfield with Dragon editor, Martin Giles and reporter, Hugh Coakley discuss the coming 2021 Surrey County Council elections.

Topics included what will decide voters, local or national issues, will the current first past the post voting system favour the incumbent party and how to increase the 30% to 40% local government election turn-out.

In the debate, Hugh Coakley refers to John Redpath as the R4GV candidate for Shalford. In fact, although he was going to stand, the R4GV candidate is now understood to be Cecilia Taylor.
