Surrey Table Tennis Association News December 2023

I am very sad to report that Surrey County Life President Mike Kercher (Sutton), passed away on November 20 aged 89.

He was an Ivor Montagu Award winner, coach to many international players and a true gent.

Tony Needham (New Malden) won three silver medals at the Australian Veterans Championships. 

One for each of the Singles, Doubles and Team events, all in the over 75s category and his doubles and team partner was Clive Sim.

Danielle Kelly and Lara Whitton.

Surrey based Danielle Kelly beat Mollie Paterson at the Home Nations International in the Wales versus England match picking up a silver medal in the Senior Women’s team event and Daneille won a bronze medal in the Senior Women’s Doubles with Lara Whitton. 

Former Surrey player Alex Gillen won bronze in the Men’s Senior Singles event and in the Doubles Alex Gillen also won bronze in the Doubles with Tom Davis.

Surrey based Radoslav Kamberov (New Malden) was Man of the Match on his debut for Ormesby in the Senior British League Premier Division against Fusion. Shaquille Webb-Dixon and Robert Pelc (Sutton) played for Fusion.

At the Veterans Eastern Masters, Tony Needham won the over 70s Men Doubles with Graham Outrim.

Diane McLellan (Ashford) was over 50s Women’s Doubles Runner-up with Rachael Smith. 

Percy Collino won the Men’s over 60s Singles title and Tony Needham was also Runner-up in the Men’s over 75 Singles.

Surrey Senior1st team.

Surrey Senior 1st team, represented by Krish Chotai (NewMalden), Henry Maric-Murray (South Croydon), David McKenzie, Evelyn Pace and Chaoba Thounaoijam (Rosehill), and captained by Goran Maric (South Croydon), performed superbly in the Premier Division.

They lost to Leicester 6-4 but beat Kent 7-3 and beat Nottinghamshire 6-4.  Henry was player of the weekend with five out of six wins and two Player of the Match Awards. 

Surrey Veterans 1st team of Adam Laws (Godalming), Simon Phillipsz Tim Waller (Burymead) and Kinga Oryl (Godalming) beat Middlesex III 8-2, drew with Norfolk I 5-5. 

Surrey Veterans 2nd team, consisting of Phil Snelson (Burymead), Daniel Heo (Burymead), Steve Davis (Merrow) and Diane McLellan beat Oxfordshire 7-3; drew with Kent IV 5-5 and drew with Hertfordshire II 5-5. 

Surrey Veterans 3rd team of Samson Bekele, Quan Zhou (Eldon), Paul Baker (Burymead) and Kumiko Williams (New Malden) drew with Bedfordshire II 5-5 and drew with Cambridgeshire 5-5.
