The contamination problem that delayed the opening of the Stoke Park paddling pool is still being investigated, Guildford Borough Council said today (May 30). The pool remains closed.

Describing the nature of the problem, the council revealed that initial tests had shown that the water was alkaline and it appeared to be frothy.

“As a result, the water did not meet required safety standards,” a statement said.

“The safety of our visitors is our utmost priority. We are working with our contractors to resolve this issue and open the paddling pool as soon as possible.”

The pool was due to have opened last weekend in time for the half-term break but last-minute tests showed it wasn’t safe. The council said it was unable to provide the public with an opening date.

Explaining its decision to close the pool, an earlier statement said: “The pool was filled as part of our standard seasonal preparation on the May 11 and 12. Despite our best efforts, water testing – which must take place just before opening – revealed that the paddling pool water did not meet the required safety standards and as a result, the pool remains closed.

“These water tests need to take place just prior to opening, as doing them too early may not give accurate results at the point of opening.”

The statement added: “We’re in the process of emptying the paddling pool and thoroughly flushing it to remove any contaminated water. Repeated flushing of the pool and water system will take place to ensure all contaminants are removed. Water sensors that have been damaged by contaminated water will also be replaced to ensure accurate water monitoring.

“By following these steps, we hope to effectively address the contamination issue and ensure the pool is safe for use.

“We’re unable to confirm an exact opening date at this time. The pool will open as soon as it is safe to do so, and we will keep the public updated as we progress through testing and treatment.”

The council said: “We understand how frustrating delays are and we’re really sorry. We aim to open the pool on schedule each year, but factors such as weather, maintenance needs and water quality can sometimes cause delays.

“We’re working hard to ensure everyone visiting Stoke Park paddling pool has a fun, enjoyable and safe time. Over the past few months, we have made significant improvements to the paddling pool, including resurfacing, early recruitment of staff to run the facility and additional training of staff to enhance safety and service.”
