Mayor’s Charity Ball Raises £13,000 To Help Young Innovators

Inspiring Guildford’s future innovators was the theme of Eureka! The Mayor’s Ball.

The spectacular fundraising event, to help celebrate the Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Nikki Nelson-Smith’s mayoral year, was hosted by G Live on Saturday, February 6, and raised money for local charity, SATRO.

SATRO’s vision is to inspire and enthuse young people about the world of work, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Guests were greeted on arrival by the mayor, flanked by several McLaren sports cars. Guests were also able to admire Mirror Moo from the Surrey Hills Cow Parade and try out some electric bikes as well.

During the evening, the mayor spoke about her theme for the year which is titled Inspiring Guildford’s Future Innovators. She is passionate about local young people being inspired by the vast range of employment opportunities available to them in the borough.

Beccy Bowden, CEO of SATRO said: “Nikki has worked so hard during her mayoral year to raise the profile of her theme and our charity and we are so grateful to her.

“This evening is a fitting celebration of everything she has achieved. We are so proud and grateful to be Nikki’s chosen charity of the year.”

Guests were treated to a celebrity auction of promises hosted by SATRO Patron, Jon Tickle, who was ably assisted by Nicholas Smith of Barclays and his fundraising team.

The mayor said: “With over 260 people in attendance, it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and I truly appreciate the support everyone showed me.

“A particular thank you must go to McLaren for bringing us supercars and a show engine with which to adorn G Live and also to the University of Surrey for believing in me and sponsoring the event.

“I had a wonderful and entertaining evening, during which we raised over £13,000 for SATRO. Thank you to everyone who participated.”
