Nearly 30,000 people enjoyed a truly spectacular 2015 Armed Forces Day National Event held in Guildford on Saturday (June 27) in fine weather.

Crowds lined the High Street to see a parade of armed forces personnel, cadets and veterans, with the Duke of York taking the salute in front of Tunsgate, opposite the Guildhall.

Present was the Prime Minister David Cameron and Defence Secretary Michael Fallon. A tweeted rumour that the Mr Cameron would not attend because of his need to attend a COBRA intelligence committee meeting, following the terrorist attack in Tunisia, proved unfounded. There was some spontaneous cheering from spectators as he emerged from his bullet proof car by the Guildhall.

The day’s events began at 9.30 am with a service of celebration at Guildford Cathedral.  Members of all three services attended along with invited guests including councillors, Guildford’s MP Anne Milton and members of the armed forces defence secretary Michael Fallon.

The religious service was led by the Bishop of Guildford, the Right Reverend Andrew Watson.

In his address, he said: “The peoples of our nations owe a huge gratitude to people in the armed forces and that is what we will celebrate today.

“To all our armed forces, we thank you.”

The next part of the day was a parade that made its way up the High Street to the Guildhall where contingents saluted the Duke of York who was representing the Queen.

A number of military bands took part in the parade.

The parade then marched on to Stoke Park which quickly filled up with people, some who had followed from the High Street, to see a wealth of static displays from the three armed forces, as well as flypasts, parachutists, and plenty of arena displays.

The following pictures show some of the many things there were to see and do at Stoke Park.

The British Army’s main battle tank the Challenger 2 is considered to be one of the best protected tanks in the world. The turret and hull are protected with Chobham armour originally developed in the 1960s at the British tank research centre a few miles away on Chobham Common. Visible in the picture at the end of the barrel is the rifling in the barrel, an unusual feature in tanks of the current era. It has seen operational service in Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq.

A Spitfire and Hurricane from the Battle of Britain flight in formation over Stoke Park; a reminder to those in attendance that the day was about those who have served as well as those currently serving.

This is actually not a tank but a 155mm self-propelled howitzer, the AS90 “Braveheart” which entered service with the British Army in 1992 and is used by units such as the Royal Horse Artillery.

As can be see from this view looking eastwards, the event occupied Stoke Park in its entirety so that despite the many thousands present there was plenty of room to move around or even sit on the grass and have a drink or a bite to eat, perhaps from one of the huge range of catering stalls available.

“Wheelbarrow” is a device used in bomb disposal that must have saved many lives since its introduction in Northern Ireland in the 1970s. It also these days incorporates electronic counter measures to disrupt radio signals that might be used to trigger a detonation.

The red-arrows, as ever, an impressive part of any national occasion, their high speed formation flying clearly demonstrating the skill of the Royal Air Force pilots.
