Timeless Guildford

Timeless Guildford. The High Street clock handless and useless.

Guildford is timeless. Or so it appears if you approach the Guildhall from the top of the High Street.

From the lower High Street direction the clock still has its hands .... only the time is wrong

From the lower High Street direction the clock still has its hands …. only the time is wrong. It was actually 12.57pm.

This week workers have been observed dismantling the upper side clock face which has now been left handless.

A few weeks ago the clock was stopped altogether for a number of days, with the hands set at 12 o’clock, while repairs were carried out.

The clock has been unreliable ever since an automatic winding system was installed last year. Despite the automation, manual intervention continued to be necessary to maintain accuracy.

However, according to one of the team carrying out the repair work on Monday (September 23), the connection mechanism between the time piece in the Guildhall roof space and the clock face hands was “juddering” causing the hands to stick.

It is not yet known when Guildford can expect to have its iconic clock back in full working order.

On Monday the clock was faceless revealing to anyone who did not know that the mechanism is not not just behind but in the Guildhall roof space
