The TSB announced earlier this week that, as part of a cost-cutting plan, the Guildford branch would close in July 2020. It will be one of the 82 locations around the country to close.
It has been reported that between 300 and 400 jobs would be lost as part of the closure plan.
The closure will be another blow to the upper High Street with four adjacent shops already empty (formerly Giraffe, Maplins, Chilli Pepper and William Hill).
Staff in the branch at the top of the upper High Street said that they were not able to discuss the closures but they were hopeful that they would be redeployed at one of the 454 branches remaining open.
A statement from TSB said that there had been a 17% reduction in the number of transactions in its branches nationally with people increasingly using online services.
The specific review of the Guildford branch highlighted how few customers were using the branch. The review noted that only one customer visited regularly each week with 33 using it on a regular monthly basis.
It also said that there were only 113 transactions per week in the branch, about 23 per day, in the second quarter of 2019. This compared to 127 transactions in the same period the previous year.
With the branch in Woking also closing next year, the nearest branches to Guildford will be either in Camberley (10 miles) or Ascot (13 miles).
