The Guildford Twinning Association’s challenge to secondary school students in Guildford and Freiburg – to make a two-minute film in each other’s language – was enthusiastically taken up.
Judges in both towns were impressed by the way the participants expressed themselves on film and enjoyed playing with cinematic techniques.
Prizes were awarded by senior dignitaries – the Mayor of Guildford here at home and a City Councillor over in Freiburg.
Chair of the GTA Barabara Ford said: “Please watch the films. Two of the winners are embedded in this article [above], others can be seen via our website here or one after the other via our YouTube playlist here.
“Note the use of techniques such as: jump cuts, slo-mo, personalised cartoons, even a couple of dogs.
“Yes, there’s room for improvement, but as one of the judges, Bülent Gençdemir, managing director of Südfilm Mediengruppe based in Freiburg, told the Freiburg winners: ‘You’re on the right track’.
“The overall standard has improved since last year, as has participation – more kids, more schools (2021: 25 students, three schools; 2022: 40 students, six schools) – and we hope this will continue, so that the GTA too is on the right track, engaging youngsters in each twin town.”
The Guildford Twinning Association is a voluntary organisation, supporting the formal twinning of Guildford and Freiburg and promoting cooperation and friendship.

And finally… can readers solve the mystery: given that students from all secondary schools were invited to take part, why were there only girl participants in Guildford and only boy participants in Freiburg?
