Guildford marked the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe on Friday (May 8) with a two-minute silence from the Guildhall in the High Street.

A small crowd gathered in front of the Guildhall for the ceremony that included words from the mayor’s chaplain, the Revd Huge Grear. The exhortation was read before the silence by Bill Wallis, a local veteran and member of the Royal Air Force Association.

Among those on the balcony with the Mayor of Guildford, David Elms, were cadets from the army, air force and navy.

A maroon, sounded from the Castle Grounds, marked the start and end of the two-minute silence.
