Guildford’s first Morrisons Local store opened in the Upper High Street on Thursday morning (June 5) with a little help from Voluntary Action South West Surrey and the halow project.

Marking Volunteers’ Week (June 1 to 7), Morrisons Local invited staff from the Guildford Volunteer Centre in Castle Street to attend the cutting of the ribbon to officially open the store and to promote their services.

In turn, Voluntary Action invited the halow project, based in Quarry Street, to go along as it relies on a good number of volunteers to help its work supporting young people aged 16 to 35 with a learning disability.

Store manager Jamie Wheeler was delighted as the store soon filled up with customers, while the Volunteer Centre staff handed out leaflets and spoke to people as they entered the shop.

Emma Robinson from Voluntary Action South West Surrey, who is based at the Guildford Volunteer Centre, said: “We hope to further our links with Morrisons Local as this brand is all about being in the local community, as we are too, with the many services we offer.”
