Guildford borough residents who go the extra mile to help their local community have been recognised at the annual Mayor’s Awards for Service to the Community.
A ceremony took place at the Guildhall last weekend to celebrate the achievements of 20 people who were nominated by residents in the borough.
Among the recipients were a number of members of the Surrey Choices Guildford Community Group, who were nominated by Garry Jones, community warden at Guildford Borough Council.
Volunteers who fundraise, run support groups and act as trustees were also among those nominated. As was Karen Taylor, the choirmaster of the popular Rhythm of Life Community Choir, based in Park Barn.
The mayor will be presenting a posthumous award to the widow of Haydn Morris, former CEO of Catalyst at its offices. Catalyst put forward Mr Morris for a Mayor’s Award because of his unique and visionary contribution to transforming the social landscape on drug, alcohol and mental health issues in the borough.
The Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Nigel Manning, said: “I was delighted to welcome local residents to a special awards ceremony to celebrate their achievements in supporting their local communities throughout the borough. It’s great to get together and celebrate the community spirit that makes Guildford the place it is.”

It is wonderful to hear all that these worthy volunteers do.
Ann Philps was also one who received the Mayor’s award for her 20 years volunteering and dedication to the Sidney Sime gallery in Worplesdon.
Well done to all the recipients. The borough wouldn’t be the same without all that you do.
