Guildford City (0) 1 – Redhill (1) 2
By Charlie Matthews
It was back at the Spectrum once again with Redhill the visitors who were last here in a thriller of the final game of last season.
Both teams started Saturday’s match with little between them, neither team breaking through for a real chance.
City’s first real effort came in the 11th minute when Sonny Cooper took the ball round his man and laid the ball off to Deven Reid-Solanki in the box, but a great defensive interception saw the ball cleared away.
Redhill then answered with a well taken set piece catching most City players off guard, but the effort just missed the goal.
Come the 24th minute, Redhill received a free kick in a dangerous position. However the ball was hit over the crowd of players in the box leading to a corner kick. It was a poor corner, and City broke from deep but the attack broke down.
Guildford just weren’t making the most of the possession, and they were made to pay in the 37th minute when Redhill opened the scoring. It came from a well-worked corner falling to Arlie Talboys in space and he fired it into the net to put the visitors into the lead.
Once again, at the start of the second half, both teams were evenly matched. However things changed when Redhill scored another goal.
It was a well-worked pattern of play leading to Timmy Obisanya slotting the ball into an open goal.
There then followed City substitutions with Edward, Chang- Brown, Stingelin and Skeene all being replaced by Drake, Matthews, Brown and Acheampong.
As the game went on City tried to work it down the wings but never really managed to cause a serious threat to the Redhill side. Redhill caught City on the counterattack throughout the second half. Marvin Wood was excellent, making saves to deny the third.
With the game going into added time Guildford didn’t really look like scoring until Redhill gave away a penalty in the 90+10 minutes of added time. Darnell Jon- Peter stepped up and slotted it into the corner with keeper James Dillion guessing the right way but not managing to get a hand on the ball.
The final whistle soon blew, and City’s first home game of the season had ended in defeat.
