The Guildford City squad, management team, volunteers and supporters did not let their eventually failure to stave of relegation get them down when they met up to mark the end of the season.

It was widely recognised that in the final third of the season manager Carl Taylor had put together a team that could challenge any other team in the division rewarding loyal supporters with some entertaining and skilful play. Sadly it came a little too late.

Secretary Barry Underwood thanking the players, the management and all of the club volunteers, said: “The squad had given everything in the later months of the campaign with a young squad playing some great football.

“Relegation would give the club time to reset and come back as a stronger club”.

Team captain Kai Zini unsurprisingly dominated the awards, winning the Manager’s Player, Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player of the Season statuettes.

He also won the top goalscorer award with a highly respectable 15 goals.

The evening’s other prize winner was 19- year-old goalkeeper Marvin Wood who won the Young Player award.

Can the recipients of those precious gongs remain standing because the Sweeney supporters would like congratulate both team captain Kai Zini and goalkeeper Marvin Wood for their outstanding achievements, together with Guildford City in recognising such talent.

The relegation is already confirmed from the Combined Counties Premier Division South, sad as it may seem, but City can now look forward to playing Step 6 football next season and have the chance of make it a league of their own.

The Sweeney fans would like to wish manager Carl Taylor and all those involved with GCFC every bit of success both on and off the field.
