Guildford Borough Council is this week supporting Great Big Green Week, the UK’s largest celebration of community action to help tackle climate change. And residents are being urged to get involved.

The theme for 2026, “Together for Good”, highlights how collective action can create greener, healthier neighbourhoods and safeguard the natural environment for future generations.

Residents, businesses and community groups across Guildford are being invited to get involved in a wide range of activities designed to inspire positive environmental change.

The week culminates in one of the borough’s flagship sustainability events. Guildford Green Day returns to Guildford High Street on Sunday (June 14th), from 11am to 4pm.

It’s a free, fun day out for all the family which encourages visitors to ‘Be part of a greener Guildford’. Highlights of the day include:

  • Electric vehicle showcase: step inside Stagecoach’s new electric bus
  • Sustainable travel advice: get information on cycling, bike check-ups and repairs
  • Recycling and waste reduction guidance: learn how to reduce waste and improve recycling at home
  • Local food and artisan stalls: a wide range of locally sourced produce
  • Community organisations and eco-groups: offering advice and ways to get involved

Guildford Green Day is designed to give residents simple ideas they can take home to reduce their environmental impact.

Cllr Angela Goodwin

Cllr Angela Goodwin, Lead Councillor for Environment and Sustainability at Guildford Borough Council, said: “Great Big Green Week is a brilliant opportunity for everyone in Guildford to get involved in climate action and see how small changes can make a big difference. It’s about coming together as a community to protect our environment and create a more sustainable future.

“One of the council’s key priorities is to make Guildford a more sustainable borough and it’s vital we foster that collective spirit.

“I’d encourage residents, families and businesses to take part in the events happening across the borough and, in particular, join us at Guildford Green Day. It’s a fantastic, free day out with plenty of ideas, activities and inspiration to help you live more sustainably.”

Guildford Borough Council says it continues to make progress towards its climate commitments, working with partners, residents and businesses to reduce emissions and protect the environment.

Key initiatives being delivered this year include:

  • Reducing carbon emissions from council operations. This involves ongoing work to improve the energy efficiency of council buildings, including leisure facilities, through upgrades to heating systems and energy-saving technologies.
  • Improving recycling and reducing waste, including enhancements to local recycling services, making it easier for residents to recycle a wider range of materials and reduce contamination.
  • Helping residents cut food waste
  • Protecting nature and biodiversity. The council says there is continued work with local partners and volunteers to enhance green spaces, support wildlife habitats and promote nature recovery across the borough.

There are plenty of ways to take part in climate change initiatives in Guildford. Visit the Council’s Guildford Climate Hub for more information.
