The Currys PC World store is to move to Ladymead Retail Park and replace the Homebase store there, says a planning application submitted to Guildford Borough Council. The future of Guildford’s Homebase branch is uncertain.
A spokesperson from Dixons Carphone, owners of Currys PC World, said: “We’ll relocate our store on Woodbridge Road to Ladymead Retail Park after Christmas.
“At that point, our Woodbridge Road store will close and be handed back to the landlords who will decide on future plans for the site. All colleagues will be redeployed at the new store.”
Staff at both Currys PC World and Homebase did not appear to be aware of the change to come when questioned by The Guildford Dragon NEWS. Managers at the two stores declined to comment.
And there was no comment from Homebase head office on the fate of their Guildford branch. A spokesperson confirmed that they were aware of the planning application but declined to comment.
Homebase has struggled since being taken over by the Australian DIY company, Wesfarmers, in 2016 for £340m. It was sold to the restructuring company Hilco which bought the DIY chain for £1 in May 2018.
Plans to close 42 of its 241 stores were part of a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) announced in August 2018 but the Guildford branch was thought to be safe. Now, the planning application brings this into question.
The planning application 19/P/00588 can be viewed on the GBC website here.

Can we expect Lidl or Aldi to move into the empty Curry’s site? Can you imagine the traffic?
