Donations of unwanted laptop computers are being asked for by Action for Carers Surrey, to be given to young carers to help with their schooling.
Surrey-wide and based in Burpham, Action for Carers has already supplied 21 laptop computers to young people, but have a waiting list for more.
The charity says the coronavirus lockdown has been especially difficult for young carers, taking on extra responsibilities and worried for the person they care for.
A large number live in shielding households and like all the UK’s children, they’ve not been at school – with many still unable to return.
Schooling at home is a particular challenge for young carers, having to juggle it with caring responsibilities.
Additionally, carer households are often poorer, meaning less access to IT equipment.
Action for Carers Surrey adds that it has heard of many young carers trying to do school tasks and Zoom meetings on tiny mobile screens, and sadly schools have not been able to help all children in need.
The charity has been working with the help of a host of kind Surrey community groups – Rotary clubs, Lions clubs (who have been reconditioning the machines), Soroptimists, and Brownies – to get young carers computers.
Young carer Lauren said: “I’m a young carer for my big brother – he has autism and anxiety. He doesn’t leave the house a lot so I love spending time with him. Action for Carers have donated me a Chrome Notebook to do my school work and Zoom calls with my class. I’m so happy I can talk to my teachers all the time now and my friends! Thank you!
”Young carer Max said: “Thank you so much Action for Carers and the Lions, the laptop has helped me so much. I can complete all my school work at home independently now, rather than having to share an old iPad with my brothers.”
If you have a laptop computer to spare, send an email to: fundraising@actionforcarers.org.uk
