“Fake news!” is an accusation made more a more frequently against news media especially by US President Trump, who seems to label any news he does not like as such.

But how should we properly define fake news in an age when many are getting their “news” from social media, rather than more orthodox news publications, how can it be recognised and what should be done about it?

George Orwell’s thesis in his dystopian novel 1984 was that objective truth exists independently of political narratives and the modern fight against fake news mirrors Winston Smith’s fundamental realisation: the ultimate freedom is the right to state that two plus two make four.
