Family Owned Store Moffats – ‘Welcome Back To Guildford Is Overwhelming’

Moffats, the family run outdoor equipment and fashion shop that returned to Guildford earlier this year, has been overwhelmed by the welcome it has received from customers.

Moffats new shop opened at the top of North Street.

A rent review in 2017 of its previous shop, on the junction between the High Street and North Street (opened in 2007), had caused its owners, the Goss family, to have a rethink. And after trading for 90 years in Guildford, the shop was temporarily closed.

In August this year (2018) Moffats returned, around the corner at 85 North Street, Guildford GU1 4AU.

Owner and manager of the shop Mark Goss said: “We stock brands that you won’t find anywhere else and that makes Moffats unique.”

He runs the shop with his son and business partner, Taylor Goss. “We love retail and the challenge,” said Mark. “Our original motto was ‘Try Moffats First’ and that still holds true today.”

The former Moffats store in Woodbridge Road, Guildford.

Mark fondly remembers his grandfather who opened the first Moffats shop in Onslow Street in 1927. Branches were later added in North Street and Woodbridge Road, the latter fondly remembered by many local shoppers.

I remember it well. The last time I shopped there was in 1971!

It was always the place to get a bargain and that I bought my first pair of jeans, which must have been around 1951.

I left Guildford some 50 years ago and still have family there, but I don’t get there as much as I perhaps should.

What became of Millets which was further up North Street close to Ward Street?

And on another note, does anyone remember the slaughter house in North Street? It was roughly where Robert Dyas also once was.
