Coventry Blaze defied a 61-25 shot differential to secure a 5-3 Cup win over the Flames on Spectrum ice.
Tyler Busch set the home team to a lead at 8:22, but Grant Mismash levelled dead on the 14 minute mark and the clubs started the middle set square on a goal each.
91 seconds after re-start Michael Pelech offered Blaze their first lead of the contest. Not long after Flames failed to take advantage of an extended five on three manpower situation, Lewis Hook evened the count at two, but inside the final minute of the frame Alessio Luciani had Blaze back in front.
Just over a minute into the third, Matthew Gleason converted a powerplay to double the Blaze advantage. 45 seconds after that, Cole Ully pulled Flames back to a goal off the pace, but a 52nd minute Sam Ruffin strike ensured a full comeback would not materialize before the end of the evening.
Taz Burman made 20 saves on 25 shots against Mat Robson who made 58 saves on 61 his way.
“This isn’t where we want to be after a game like that, but we have to pick ourselves up immediately and get ready for Nottingham midweek,” said Paul Dixon.
“There is understandable frustration here when you spend most of the night in the other team’s zone and you still end up on the short end.”
