Cole Ully had a natural hat-trick in less than seven minutes in the 2nd period, but Flames handed back a 3-1 lead late in the final set to fall 4-3 to bottom of the standings, Fife Flyers at Kirkcaldy.
After a scoreless opening frame where Taz Burman was perfect on nine shots while Shane Owen for Fife steered aside all 12 his way, each team got on the board early in the second period.
The hosts opened their account at 24:34 through Keaton Jameson, but Ully replied less than a minute later to level at a goal each. His second goal of the night at 30:38 was followed by the completion of his three goal feat just 39 seconds after that to put Flames two goals to the good with 20 minutes to go.
But things unravelled for the visitors inside the final 10 minutes with a pair of goals to bring Flyers level thanks to Justin Ducharme at 51:30 then Keaton’s second of the night just over a minute later.
A Flames powerplay, and a chance to get back in front failed to convert, and just seconds after Flyers returned to five skaters they went back in front with what turned out to be the winner off the stick of Mason Alderson.
Burman made 22 saves on 26 shots while Owen had 38 on 41.
“We know when we are up a pair inside the last 10 minutes we have to be able to close it out,” explained coach Paul Dixon, “and we handed back points in a game that was ours to take.”
