An early goal from Flames and Steelers was all the scoring either team could muster in the first leg of the aggregate goal play-off quarter final leaving both sides to decide it in a the second leg showdown this afternoon (4pm, April 12) in Sheffield.
A capacity crowd of 2,000 saw the teams trade strikes less than three minutes apart on either side of the period’s halfway mark with Jamal Watson kicking it off before Evan Jasper brought it level for a 1-1 tie.
Neither team could find another before the first period ended, and the 20 minutes that followed were also scoreless, thanks to goalies Justin Fazio, at the Flames end, and Matt Greenfield guarding the visitor’s cage.
About halfway through the third period, Flames blueliner Jonathan Racine was handed a major penalty for head contact, but fortunately for Spectrum’s men it was mitigated by a Steelers fight instigator to chew the first two minutes of that stretch at 4 on 4.
When Steelers did get to the three minute, man advantage, powerplay portion, a solid penalty kill limited chances and held the score at a goal each by the time Flames returned to full strength about five minutes from time.
Not long after that, a Steelers’ minor put Flames to a powerplay to try and take an aggregate lead, but with no luck there, today’s game is set up as a “winner take all” event.
Fazio made 40 saves on 41 shots while Greenfield also had just a single blemish on the 31 shots his way.
“Killing that penalty in the third was huge,” said Flames’coach Paul Dixon, “to make sure a short period of time did not bury us with two or three goals on a powerplay and now we are in a manageable position needing to win a single game to move on.”
