The Castle Grounds was busy on Saturday (June 4) with people enjoying the entertainment that was all part of the launch of this year’s Guildford In Bloom.
The Mayor of Guildford, Gordon Jackson; Anne Milton MP; and Diana Summerhayes of the Castle Green Bowling Club, got the event under way by cutting a ribbon in front of the capet bedding that this year commemorates the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Throughout the afternoon there was plenty of entertainment from the bandstand featuring music and drama which delighted the large crowd.
Local historian David Rose gave a short talk about the history of the castle and its grounds and also performed with the Rhythm of Life community choir.
He said: “It was a lovely event and I was honoured to be asked to give a talk and for the opportiunity of our choir to be a part of the day. Thanks go to the people of Guildford Fringe for making everything run so smoothly on the bandstand.”
The entertainment was hosted by Guildford Fringe and featured some of the artists who will be appearing at its festival this summer.
Member of the Castle Green Bowling Club provided refreshments from its clubhouse and raised a healthy £500 for its own funds.
People could also try their hand at playing bowls.
Shirley West from the bowling club said: “What a great turn out. I have never seen the Castle Grounds so busy. I enjoyed singing with the Rhythm of Life community choir and the bowls club members were kept very busy providing refreshments, and we sold out of cakes.”
Once again, the Castle Grounds looks splendid – a credit to Guildford Borough Council’s parks and leisure services department.
