Local historian and Dragon NEWS writer David Rose will again be leading guided circular walks in the local area as part of Guildford Walkfest 2017.
As part of his role co-ordinating Joining In! – a project that supports community involvement and managed by Voluntary Action South West Surrey, there are four walks to choose from…
Tuesday, September 5: Westborough walk – a one-hour walk about a mile in length. Meet at 10.30am at the Park Barn Centre, off Park Barn Drive, GU2 8EN.
The walk follows the route of a useful fitness trail with gym equipment that weaves its way through parts of Westborough’s open spaces.
Thursday, September 14: In the footsteps of the Romans – a two-and-a-half-hour walk about three miles in length. Meet at 10.30am the Park Barn Centre.
Hear about a Roman ‘frontier’ settlement that was to the west of Guildford on Broadstreet Common. The walk also takes in parts of Westborough and Park Barn including open spaces and woodland and featuring the ‘reservoir hill’ where there are spectacular views.
Monday, September 18: Tracing a Medieval royal deer park – a two-hour walk about two miles in length. Meet at 2pm at the Park Barn Centre.
See near today’s Surrey Sports Park where there was once a medieval manor house visited by royalty. Then see what goes on at the ultra modern Surrey Research Park!
Sunday, September 24: Bellfields and Stringers Common – a two-mile walk about two miles in length. Meet at 2pm on Bellfields Green, off Hazel Avenue.
Hear about the history of today’s Bellfields area and the little-known Stringers Common.
All walks have stops at places of interest and there is time to talk to David and ask further questions about the local history of the area.
