Guildford Crematorium has won a Civic Trust Award, one of 45 projects recognised in this year’s international competition of excellence in the built environment.
The award judges said the building provided “a beautiful architectural backdrop to the celebration of life.”
The highly acclaimed crematorium opened in 2019 and this award adds another prize to its previous four successes, namely the RIBA South East Regional RIBA Awards (Shortlisted 2022), Wood Award (Shortlisted, 2021), SPACES Award (Highly Commended, Community Category, 2021) and Guildford Society Design Award Winner (2020).
The Guildford Society award judges had praised the new crematorium in 2020 saying: “We felt the new buildings and spaces were timeless and would continue to provide a calm and dignified experience for many years to come.”
Lead councillor for Environment, James Steel (Lib Dem, Westborough), said on the latest award: “It is fantastic that Guildford Crematorium has won this prestigious award for the positive cultural, social, economic and environmental benefits it brings to our local community.”
The crematorium, designed by Haverstock, provides a chapel for 135 people seated and 50 standing spaces. The new reflection pool provides a meditative space filled with different colours and scents.
