A 26-year-old man is behind bars for dangerous driving after a high-speed police pursuit between Cranleigh and Guildford in April this year.
Jamie Jayson Cansell, of Farncombe, was sentenced to 16 months for driving no offences and failing to provide a sample. He has also been banned for three years and eight months, his driving record has been endorsed, and he will have to take an extended test.
Cansell was spotted driving a black Fiat Punto erratically and at excessive speed about 3am on April 2 in Cranleigh. He failed to stop for police and was pursued for nearly 20 minutes around Cranleigh and Bramley. A tyre deflation device had to be deployed three times before the car was halted and Cansell was arrested.
At Guildford magistrates’ court on May 10, Cansell pleaded guilty to driving dangerously, driving otherwise than in accordance with a license, of using a vehicle without third-party insurance and failing to provide a sample. He was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on June 7.
Sergeant Gary Lefort, of the Roads Policing Unit; said: “Cansell’s driving was extremely dangerous, and it is fortunate nobody was hurt.
“Driving recklessly puts everyone on the road at risk, not just the driver. Thanks to the hard work of officers, Cansell will be unable to return to the roads until he has proven himself safe to do so.”
