A Brilliant Showcase at the Highways Open Day
What an incredible day!
Thank you to everyone who came along to our second Surrey Highways Open Day at Merrow Depot on Saturday June 14. With around 300 residents in attendance, it was our biggest and best one yet! From families climbing aboard gritters and diggers to young children setting up their own mini roadworks, there was fun and fascination for every age.
It wasn’t just about fun and games – visitors also had the chance to meet the teams who keep Surrey moving all year round.
Our teams loved chatting with residents about everything from pothole repairs to future transport plans and explaining how innovative tools like Hydrorock drainage and LED cat’s eyes are making our roads safer and greener.
One local resident, Michael, told us: “I came away with more awareness and frankly respect for these ‘behind the scenes’ workers, most of whom I never gave a thought to. I learnt about the science behind road surfaces, and I had no idea we have a lorry that measures skid resistance!
“Plus, a department has claimed back half a million pounds from insurance companies after damage to our roads – that’s our money they recovered!”
This year’s event proved just how much there is to discover about the work we do – and how valued it is by the community.
If you missed it, don’t worry – we’re already thinking ahead to next year! Until then, a big thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success.
