It’s time once again to explore for free hidden treasures and celebrate history and culture with Heritage Open Days, Friday to Sunday, September 8 to 10.

Guildford is well known to have one largest number of Heritage Open Days venues in the country, with more than 50 locations to visit across the borough this year.

Included among the wide range of venues are Albury Organic Vineyard, Ash Museum and Cemetery Chapel, Effingham Golf Club, Henley Fort, Puttenham Barn Bunkhouse, Shere Museum, Wanborough Great Barn, Watts Gallery Artists’ Village, West Horsley Place, and many more, and guided walks too.

Among the number of churches that will open is St Nicolas at the foot of Guildford High Street.

It’s hosting a celebration titled Creativity Unwrapped on Saturday, September 9. Open from 10am to 4pm, visitors will be able to see its beautiful interior fittings, stained glass, Arts and Crafts carvings and the fine monuments in the Loseley Chapel, some of Guildford’s oldest.

There will be tours of the church tower at 10.30am and 11.30am, and at 11am there will be a talk about art in British cathedrals by David Greenwood.

At 2pm there will be a tour of St Nicolas’ own art and heritage, by historian Dr Catherine Ferguson.

A multi-discipline art exhibition by local artists will be open in the church all day.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Book the tower tour in advance by emailing parishoffice@saintnics.com

Do look at the entire list. There are 57 venues which are participating and they are spread throughout the borough, not just in the town. Sadly, they will not all get the same advertising.

Thank you Guildford Dragon NEWS for your article. Let’s hope people find the lesser-known hidden gems in our borough. Sime Gallery, Worplesdon (GU3 3RF) http://www.sidneysimegallery.org.uk is one such place. You will be very welcome.
