A stunning image of a Blue Heron fishing was the winner of Guildford Photographic Society’s nature competition, scooping the Mary Darke Trophy in the face of tough competition.
‘The Strike – Little Blue Heron Fishing’ by Dennis Read was judged by well-known local photographic judge Len Deeley to be the best image in the competition.
“You’ve given me a tough job with so many exceptional images here,” he told members, who gathered at Burpham Village Hall.
Dennis wins the Mary Darke Trophy, a beautiful prize presented to the club by member Mary Darke who herself is a keen nature photographer, specialising in images from Africa.
Dennis said: “I was honoured to win the trophy. There were a large number of exceptional images in the competition and the standard was very high.” The image was taken earlier this year during a month-long photography trip to the Everglades in Florida.
Runner up was Graham Mansfield with a beautiful image of an eagle owl landing. In third place was Marilyn Taylor with a maquette taken at Lopburi in Thailand.
Guildford Photographic Society is holding its holding its biennial exhibition at Guildford House Gallery from April 27 to May 18. Entrance is free and all are welcome.
The society has around 70 members most of whom are active photographers and their skills range from beginners to verging on professional calibre.
Lisa Mardell of the Guildford Photographic Society said: “We meet on Monday evenings from 8pm to 10pm at Burpham Village Hall. Newcomers are always very welcome no matter what level their interest in photography or their photographic skills.
“Just come along for a couple of evenings free and no obligation to join and see if the GPS is for you.”
