Report on councils’ partnership benefits

From Pete Bennett

chair of Residents for Guildford & Villages (R4GV)

In response to: GBC Leader Accuses Tories of Spreading Misinformation Over Council Collaboration

I have watched the argument raging over the pros and cons of the collaboration between Guildford and Waverley Councils with some despair.

When politicians are prepared to argue that black is white, is it any wonder that the public are increasingly turning to alternative sources of “truth”?

The various independent reports make a few things clear. There have been financial benefits from the merger and there was disruption from the merger that may have contributed to the housing issue not being spotted.

The stalled speed of merger has resulted in some of the benefits not yet being realised. With the coming abolition of the two councils, they probably never will.

Those are the facts. All the rest is just politics getting in the way of good governance.
