Letter: Criticism of Julie Iles Is Churlish

I think it is very churlish for anyone to criticize Julie Iles on her record. There is no doubt that she has been an excellent County councillor for the Horsleys and she had a hard act to follow, in that Bill Barker had been an outstanding councillor for so many years.

She is quite correct that there has been a tidal wave of anti-Tory feeling because of the appalling Guildford Local Plan, which she would undoubtedly have voted against, had she been a borough councillor.

Only today in the Times https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/thousands-of-green-belt-acres-wrongly-built-on-after-population-data-mistake- the Office for Statistics Regulation “confirmed that estimates had been overstated in Guildford”.

I, for one, wish Julie all the best in the next phase of her career, political or otherwise. She’d make a much better leader of the Tory party than the current incumbent, not that that would be difficult!

Nobody criticised her record. I believe as a member of the public that her campaign was at best poor and we now have Colin Cross. Let’s not forget he’s a former Liberal Democrat whose party policy is build, build, build and keep the door open to the world.

But he’s telling us he’s part of a new party which will stand against green belt development.

My guess is there will be a street named after Cllr Cross when the Wisely Airfield development goes ahead.

Speaking from personal experience. Julie Iles was certainly the best councillor I’ve come across and we will miss her enormously. She worked incredibly hard for the Horsleys and made a huge difference in her time on Surrey County Council. I am very grateful for all she did and am very sorry to see her go. I suspect many of those who voted against her will also discover that they are very sorry to see her go.
