Letter: Former Leader Should Re-evaluate His Circumstances

In response to: Expense Claim Rejection Leads To Public Criticism of GBC’s Senior Officer

Being a councillor at whatever level is not a substitute for, or a supplement to, paid employment. An allowance is a compensation for the commitment of time and expenses are for reasonable costs incurred in the legitimate pursuance of agreed duties in accordance with agreed guidelines.

I have never heard of the council refusing to pay reasonable expenses, so there must be more to this than meets the eye. I also fail to understand how Cllr Spooner can see himself as the leader of the opposition when he has a party of eight other councillors out of a total of 48.

I think he needs to re-evaluate his circumstances following the May election and it is now August!
