Letter: It’s Time For the Tory Group To Get Their House in Order

emails letterFrom Caroline Reeves

Lib Dem borough councillor for Friary & St Nicolas and leader of the opposition at Guildford Borough Council

It’s time the Conservative group got their house in order and stopped providing stories for Private Eye.

Let’s have a full and frank explanation from the council leader, so that councillors and residents can decide whether he is the the right person to lead the council through these difficult times.

The continuing rumours and uncertainty are detracting from the good work of many councillors and officers, and dragging the good name of Guildford Borough Council through the mud.

The Lib Dems’ position would command more respect now if they had shown less concern in the past not to upset the apple cart and to present a common front of ‘all the councillors doing their public duty together’ against the so-called mischievous minority of the public who were making difficulties.

They voted en bloc for the Issues and Options paper and for the Strategic Housing Market Assessment. They supported the discredited draft local plan at all stages except the final vote – when a number of Tories decided to abstain. They were apprised of likelihood that Monika Juneja did not hold the qualifications she pretended to (because a number of constituents pointed it out). But they appear to have done little or nothing.

Did they have anything to say about the Hooper Report? Or about the Standards Committee saying that the codes of conduct had not been breached?

Is this leading from the front? Or just cheering from behind?
