Letter: Listing the Debenhams Building Would Not Be a Good Idea

In response to: Debenhams Site Must Not Be Left Dormant

Although I appreciate the comment of Janet Moorhouse I have to say that it has long been my view we need more access to the river which can only be achieved by remodelling.

Furthermore, having the building officially listed would badly affect our ability to redevelop the site for housing and smaller units.

Although sad that the store could no longer trade, I have almost looked forward to the day when it closed. But as they say, as one door closes, another opens and we should seize the opportunities offered to us.

The only listing this building should achieve is the “listed for demolition”. Then perhaps the issues of road capacity and flood capacity can be reorganised perhaps by designing a new building on stilts, with road and navigation underneath.
