Letter: Waverley’s Management of CIL Money Is Morally Questionable

In response to: Conservative Claims on Use of CIL Payments ‘Political Theatre’ Say Lib Dems

The interest earned on CIL [Community Infrastructure Levy] and s106 money last year is equivalent to nearly 10 per cent of Waverley’s Council Tax income. Yet at the same time, the council has sought yet more income and increased car parking charges by nearly 30 per cent for most users over the last two years.

This is not just poor financial management — it is morally questionable.

The entire CIL debacle at Waverley has happened under the Lib Dems who have been in charge for the last six years. Relative to other district and borough councils the amount of money being collected and held by Waverley is massive.

They are now relying the interest to prop up the day-to-day business of the council.

What incentive do they have to spend it? The whole issue of CIL needs serious attention by council leadership who should be acting for the benefit of the community.
