Guildford residents are being urged to take type 2 diabetes seriously, as new research reveals that a significant number of adults in the region remain unaware of their personal risk of developing the condition.
A recent survey, conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Tesco and Diabetes UK, found that 66 per cent of people in the area have never considered their risk of type 2 diabetes. Despite one in five UK adults now living with diabetes or prediabetes, awareness around symptoms and
prevention remains worryingly low.
Type 2 diabetes is a serious, lifelong condition that can lead to devastating complications such as sight loss, strokes, heart attacks, and limb amputations. However, many people live with the condition for years without realising, as early signs can be difficult to spot.
Encouragingly, experts say that with the right support, up to half of all type 2 diabetes cases can be prevented or delayed, and in some cases, even put into remission.
Tesco is continuing its long-standing partnership with Diabetes UK to help tackle the problem locally. At Tescoâs Ashenden Road pharmacy, trained staff are available to speak with customers about their risk, offer guidance, and provide support to those living with or worried about diabetes.
Guildford residents are also encouraged to use Diabetes UKâs free online âKnow Your Riskâ tool to assess their personal risk and take early action. The tool can be accessed here.
Douglas Twenefour, head of clinical at Diabetes UK, stressed the importance of knowing your risk: âType 2 diabetes is a complex condition with many risk factors, but with the right support, itâs possible to lower your risk and live well. Weâre proud to continue our partnership with Tesco to provide practical tools and raise awareness.â
The survey also found that many people struggle to eat more healthily, with 30 per cent citing the cost of healthy food and 22 per cent saying they lack the time to prepare it. In response, Tesco and Diabetes UK have launched a new three day meal planner featuring simple, affordable, and nutritious recipes, including healthier versions of familiar favourites.
This is especially timely as eating well and staying active were the most common concerns among people contacting the Diabetes UK helpline in 2024.
Tesco Pharmacy Services Manager, Jonathan Bridgett, said: âWe are committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of our customers. Through our work with Diabetes UK, we hope to help people in Guildford understand and manage their risk and support those already living with diabetes.â
The survey revealed that one in five people couldn’t name a single symptom or risk factor of type 2 diabetes. Yet, almost two-thirds (64 per cent) believe they would feel supported by those around them if they were diagnosed, highlighting the importance of encouraging early conversations and accessible help.
