A new Civic Lab at the University of Surrey will power research into identifying and combating challenges affecting local communities.
The lab, launched at the university’s Institute for Sustainability, is a partnership with Guildford and Waverley Borough Councils, allowing researchers and council policymakers to team up to tackle local issues.
This joining of forces represents a long history of Guildford Borough Council working closely together with the university, a connection formalised with the new lab.
Professor Amelia Hadfield, Director of CIFAL Surrey at the University of Surrey, said: “University research does not exist in ivory towers; it exists in the impact it can deliver in the real world.
“Our research has global application, but the Civic Lab emphasises the importance we attach to positive local impact.”
Cllr Julia McShane, Leader of Guildford Borough Council, said: “This partnership gives us the opportunity to bring world-class research into our policymaking process.
“Civic Lab will be a space where together, we will shape a stronger, smarter, and more sustainable future for Guildford and beyond.”
The new partnership will additionally explore upcoming opportunities to give University of Surrey students practical experience through a paid placement training session.
