Report by Neil Wibberley

Once again, Scouting in Guildford has been non-stop.

As well as the sections (Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers) being active with their excellent programmes, local groups have also taken part in events at district and county level.

St George’s Day parade.

Groups from Guildford West celebrated St George’s Day (which is also the patron saint of Scouting) by parading up Guildford High Street to the Castle Grounds where the young people took part in a game around the grounds, before renewing their promises.

In attendance, was the outgoing Mayor of Guildford, Masuk Miah, and Denise Iverson, Assistant County Commissioner Beaver Scouts.

Guildford East district celebrated this day at Bentley Copse, Shere, with an afternoon of activities, and they also renewed their promises.

Carol Shirtliff presented with her Silver Wolf by District Commissioner Quentin Vaughan.

In addition, former district commissioner Carol Shirtliff , was presented the silver Wolf award, which is the highest award an adult can be awarded in Scouting.

Scouts from the district took part in a night hike which saw teams walk on routes in the Normandy area. Congratulations to 1st Stoughton who won the competition.

Good Friday Breakfast is a long-standing tradition with St Nicolas 9th Guildford Scout Group.

The group was started in 1916, when Scouts from the group, who had been assisting in the First World War as motorcycle couriers, drove from their HQ in Guildford to the Hurtwood Inn at Peaslake.

Good Friday Breakfast.

Over the years, motorbikes turned to cycles and members of the group now cycle to Peaslake. And this has now turned to a group walk up Pitch Hill.

Due to the weather this year, the walk was optional, and badges and awards were given inside Peaslake Village Hall, where Josh was able to award Silver and Gold Chief Scout Awards to Cubs and Scouts.

Beavers from Guildford East took part in this year’s Beavers Go Wild, which is a camp at Bentley Copse with lots of activities for them to participate in.

Beavers Go Wild!

Over the weekend more than 50 activities were on offer including zip line, go-karts, climbing, caving, bouncy castles, making large bubbles, giant games, abseiling, an assault course and many more.

In addition, they got to learn about British Transport Police as officers brought a vehicle and some of their equipment for the Beavers to try on.

It is lovely to see Scouting in the news, the best times of my 85 year life, Queen Scout at 1st Normandy Scout Group in the fifteen and it set me up for life.
