One You Surrey is delivering free community-based healthy heart checks in the Guildford area.

It is being delivered by Surrey Community Outreach Healthy Heart Project.

A spokesperson for One You Surrey said it is working with the North Guildford Primary Care Network to increase the number of opportunities for residents to have their blood pressure and pulse rhythm checked in a community setting.

The healthy heart check will detect any early signs of stroke or cardiovascular disease as well as providing people with healthy lifestyle support and advice.

A check will take no more than 10 to 15 minutes. A trained practitioners will measure blood pressure followed by a pulse rhythm check.

People will receive a full explanation of what their results mean, any immediate action that needs to be taken and other lifestyle support or advice.

People’s GP will also receive a copy of results, highlighting any need for a follow-up consultation, if readings are outside of a normal range.

The One You Surrey practitioners will let people know of its other programmes, for example stop smoking support and adult weight management support.

The checks are available for any Surrey resident aged 35 years or over who has not already been diagnosed or receiving treatment for hypertension, atrial fibrillation, or any other cardiovascular disease related illness.

The project is being piloted in the area of the North Guildford Primary Care Network.

Locations are in the table below and you can just drop in.

Updates on locations and times can also be found on the One You Surrey Facebook and Instagram pages.

A One You Surrey spokesperson said: “Hypertension (high blood pressure) is one of the main causes of cardiovascular disease related illnesses and stroke. Many people are unaware that they have high blood pressure or pre-high blood pressure, which can significantly increase their chance of a heart attack or stroke.

“Atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) is the most powerful single risk factor for suffering a stroke and can also remain undetected for some time.

“Early detection of these issues and onward referrals into our healthy lifestyle services, can significantly reduce these risks.”

One You Surrey is calling for Guildford-based community venues or workplace to be venues to deliver the free checks to services users or colleagues? For details send an email to hello@oneyousurrey.org.uk
