Work to build a new Tumbling Bay Weir at Millbrook, and restore the towpath bridge over it, is nearing completion says the National Trust, owners of the River Wey Navigation.

The weir collapsed dramatically in 2019 forcing a woman on the footbridge to leap to safety. Those who used the towpath as a route into town or for recreation have been waiting for restoration ever since, sometimes expressing frustration at the slow pace of progress.

The opening of the towpath is now expected in a few weeks time.

Tristan Brown, National Trust General Manager for the River Wey Navigations said: “The engineering project to replace Millbrook Weir and footbridge is coming to an end, however the bridge will remain closed for a few more weeks while a small section over the sluice gate is built off-site.

“This extra section of bridge was identified as needing replacing during the main project, and we decided to carry out this work now rather than close the towpath and footbridge again in the near future. As a result, it will be a few more weeks until the bridge is fully open.

“We’d like to thank everyone for their patience. While there may not be work happening on site every day, we are working hard behind the scenes to complete the project and minimise any delays.”
