Sign warning motorists of roadworks set to commence on Monday, July 28.

July 15 – The roadworks that were expected to require the closure of the A3100 Portsmouth Road in Guildford for two weeks from Monday, July 28 have been postponed, it has been announced today.

Just hours after a local councillor had provided more detail of the roadblock position news came through of the postponement. Although the school holidays had been selected as a time when the road was less busy they are now not expected to take place when the schools are out.

The statement from Helen Peile, stakeholder and community manager at Southern Gas Networks (SGN) read: “I’m writing with an update to let you know that our work planned to begin on Monday 28 July has been postponed. We’ll be in touch with new dates as soon as we are able, but we do not expect that it will take place during this summer’s school holiday period.

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused and thank you for helping us share this information with your wider network of contacts.”

July 13 – Residents, motorists and commuters in Guildford are advised to prepare for upcoming two-week road closure as Southern Gas Networks (SGN) begins essential gas network upgrade work along the A3100 Portsmouth Road in Peasmarsh.

See update below giving detail of road block position…

The A3100 is a busy main road into Guildford from the Godalming direction, so some traffic congestion can be expected to result on other roads at peak hours, especially the A281 Guildford to Shalford Road which is likely to be a main diversion route. The A281 was itself closed in June and traffic diverted onto the A3100.

Starting Monday, July 28, a section of Portsmouth Road at its junction with Sandy Lane will be closed for a fortnight. The works, carried out by contractor I&G on behalf of SGN, are expected to continue through to Sunday August 10. Sandy Lane will also be closed at the junction with Portsmouth Road during this time.

The project is part of SGN’s 30-year programme to replace ageing metal gas mains with modern plastic piping, which the company says will provide a safer and more reliable supply of gas to homes and businesses in the area. The new pipes are designed to last up to 80 years.

Cllr Tom Hunt

Update July 15 – According to local councillor Tom Hunt, the road will be closed from Ferry Lane up to the vicinity of The Olde Ship Inn, though access to the pub’s car park and residential roads is expected to remain possible throughout the works.

“At least SGN has planned this for August, when the volume of traffic will hopefully be a little lower than at other times,” he said. While the diversion route is lengthy, Hunt noted that similar arrangements were implemented earlier this year during A281 roadworks and acknowledged the timing as relatively favourable:

To minimise disruption, the work has been scheduled to coincide with the school summer holidays. Signed diversion routes will be in place for drivers, and pedestrian access will remain unaffected. Cyclists, however, will need to dismount and walk through the closure area.

Bus services will be impacted, and SGN is advising passengers to check with local providers for updates on route changes and temporary stop locations.

“We understand roadworks can be frustrating, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused,” SGN said in a statement. “We’ve planned this work to try to reduce disruption as much as possible.”

Once completed, SGN says the upgraded section will enhance long-term reliability for the community in Peasmarsh and surrounding areas.

SGN should remove its confusing “road closure” signs. There are still signs (17 July) on Park Street telling motorists that the road IS closed and they should use the A281.
