The nomination of the University of Surrey as The Times’ “University of the Year” is an achievement of which to be truly proud.
I was one of the first batch of post-graduate students of the university when it got the Royal Charter in 1965. The Civil Engineering Department was probably the first to move from Battersea to Guildford into a large building site with plenty of mud around.
The buildings on the site, the faculties and the number of students have increased many fold since I left the campus in 1970 but I have visited many times since to attend lectures, seminars and conferences and actually observed the gradual expansion of the university.
Well done to successive vice-chancellors and to the professors and lecturers for maintaining a high quality of teaching. I was thrilled to receive a honorary Bachelor’s degree of the university a couple of years ago on account of being a Battersea post-graduate student although I had already obtained the higher degree of the university after finishing my research.
I hope the University of Surrey will get more international recognition and continue to carry forward advancement in science and technology for the benefit of the entire human race.
The university is a great asset. It generates wealth for the county and the country. Let us hope that student accommodation issues on campus are resolved satisfactorily and most of the housing now occupied by students revert to Guildford residents and their families.
