Where Is This? No.176

Plenty of correct replies to last week’s images.

They featured the village of Chiddingfold and Beverley Hall in Haydon Place.

Many thanks to the additional information; especially Chris Townsend for her link to why it is called Beverley Hall, and Brian Holt (and others) for lots of details about Chiddingfold – and even bus routes as noted by the Stanniforth brothers! More bus pictures coming soon, I promise.

Bernard Parke also gives answers to a previous query over All Saints Church in Onslow Village and its link with the cathedral.

A delightful corner shop - but where?

A delightful corner shop – but where?

This week’s mystery vintage image was emailed by Gina Redpath and shows a corner shop. It’s close to the town centre in a street named after a prominent Victorian physician.

Have you seen this decorative feature on a building in Guildford.

Have you seen this decorative feature on a building in Guildford.

The quirky picture might prove a little difficult. It shows a decorative feature on a building in a street that runs off from the High Street. I’ll leave it at that.

I do wonder how long it takes our readers to work out these mysteries? Especially the harder ones.

If you know the answers to this week’s mysteries and can perhaps add some extra facts, please leave a reply in the box below. They will be published at about the same time next week along with two more mystery images.

I shall just say that I thought I knew exactly where it was and as soon as I saw that it had been submitted by Gina, it confirmed I was right. Gina would have good reason to have a copy of this picture!

The main photo was taken from the corner of Addison Road and Cooper Road, Guildford.

I know nothing about this shop but just recognise the building, which I believe is still there and not altered much.

    Is it Jenner Road?

The old picture is the corner of Cooper Road and Addison Road.

The side of the shop building also features in Where is This? No.120.

Looking at the two pictures they could almost have been taken on the same day.

The shop is the former post office on Addison Road, on the corner of Cooper Road in Charlotteville, featured in Where Is This? No.120.

The shop has the same Nestle’s Milk sign on the wall in both photos.

The shopkeeper’s name looks like Jones, but the initial isn’t clear.

The quirky feature is over the door of 20 Quarry Street, featured in Where Is This? No.122.

The corner shop is at 12 Addison Road on the corner of Cooper Road.

Nearly all the roads in Charlotteville are named after physicians – Sydenham, Brodie, Chessleden, Jenner, Harvey, Cline, and Addison to name a few.

I think the quirky picture may be in Milkhouse Gate off the High Street on the Tudor Rose Restaurant.

Jenner Road (Jenner was the inventor of smallpox).

The other photo is maybe the Tudor Rose in Milkhouse Gate. If it’s correct we wonder if Milkhouse Gate is a street as there is no evidence of any bus stops.

No buses but when there is plenty of milk an occasional speedboat service. Ed

    (1) This shop is at 12 Addison Road, Charlotteville.

In the photo the name Grant Jones Stores is above the door, it was later a post office and stores.

I wonder if anyone remembers the Nestles Milk sign on the side of the shop as it was shown in Where is This? No. 120.

That picture showed the sign on the side of the shop looking down Cooper Road.

    (2) I think it’s the former Tudor Rose tea rooms in Milkhouse Gate, a side alley off the High Street, now a restaurant and late-night bar.
