Several readers correctly identified last week’s vintage picture as showing the official opening of Guildford’s Town Bridge in 1902 after the previous one had been destroyed in the floods of February 1900.
Chris Townsend and Dave Middleton also added lots of extra details about the opening and noted a temporary footbridge that was in place while the new one was being constructed, plus the dispute at the time over who should pay for it!
The two phone boxes in the quirky picture can found found in Tunsgate, just behind the arch and are grade II listed.

This week’s vintage picture is taken from a picture postcard dating to the early 1900s.
About a mile and a half or so from Guildford town centre, the buildings on the right still stand, with more added just beyond in the years after this picture was taken.
Do you know where this is? As an extra clue, the shop has been a post office.
The quirky picture shows Kathryn’s House with a date of 1890 on the front of the building. It’s very visible from the road it is on, but do you know where and what it is?
If you think you know the answers and can add some extra details, please leave a reply in the box below.
The answers, along with the next pair of images, will be published at about the same time next week.

The first picture is of Epsom Road in Merrow, at the bottom of Down Road. The post office and shop was owned by the de Peare family – the youngest son Percy was killed at Passchendaele on 1st September 1917. The Merrow Residents’ Association website carries the details, and of all the other Merrow men killed in WW1 – a large number from Down Road and High Path Road.
Kathryn’s House is on the Farnham Road.

This is the Epsom Road and the corner of Down Road, which used to be a Post Office (very handy it was too, I still miss it).

Kathryn’s House is a private care home at the bottom of the Farnham Road at Guildford, on the right as you go up the hill, just past Guildford Park Avenue.
Apparently they have a special section for elderly velocipede engineers with a speedboat fixation!
The street scene is the A246 / A25 Epsom Road on the way to Merrow, with the junction of Down Road visible on the right.
The Old Post Office now serves as a “DIY Law Book Shop” and a solicitor’s office.

The vintage photo is Epsom Road and Down Road on the right. The shop on the corner which appears to be a bicycle shop is currently a book shop specialising in law books.
Kathryn’s House is a care home situated on the Farnham Road between Denzil Road and Guildford Park Road.

The vintage picture is of Epsom Road looking east with the Down Road turning on the right.
Kathryn’s House is in Farnham Road on the right just before Denzil Road and is a residential nursing home.
Previously it was a clinic (STD)! of the old Royal Surrey just up the hill.

The postcard shows the buildings at the foot of Down Road, Merrow, at the junction with Epsom Road. The giveaway wall signs are partly legible. In 1905, one Alfred Booth de Peare was sub-postmaster – and dairyman!
The 1890 building I remember from the 1950s as the Surrey County Council Dental Clinic on the Farnham Road, below Denzil Road. Previously it had been a dispensary, probably connected with the old Royal Surrey County Hospital.

I suspect the picture is taken in the Epsom Road. Long before a great deal of development.
It may be the junction of Down Road and Epsom Road.

I think this is the junction of Down Road with Epsom Road looking towards Merrow.
The “empty” space beyond the houses is where Darington Drive and Holford Road were constructed.
The wall on the left hand side of the photo fronts ‘Parklands’ (an old white painted house now converted to flats).
The second picture, I have no idea.

1. Epsom Road looking towards Merrow. The shop on the right was Down Road sub-post office, in the 1980s it was owned by Allan Stanley.
Later it was also Out of Town Gift shop, now Your Law: D.I.Y.law book shop and solicitors.
2. Kathryn’s House, 43-49 Farnham Road, is between Guildford Park Road, and Denzil Road.
Now a residential care home for people with dementia and old age residents.
