Another Chance To Have Your Guildford History Question Answered

Published on: 21 Aug, 2017

Here’s another chance to ask the experts – Matthew Alexander, David Rose, Mary Alexander and David Calow – anything you like about Guildford’s history.

Have you got a burning question about Guildford’s history?

The next Guildford History Question Time, takes place on Monday, September 11, 7.30pm, at the Keep pub, Castle Street.

With Guildford Dragon NEWS editor Martin Giles chairing this enjoyable evening there will be plenty of time to discuss Guildford’s history and heritage and hear about the progress being made in the project to revamp the town’s museum.

Audience questions will be collected during the 30 mins before the event starts at 7.30pm.

People, places, events, mysteries, rumours, – ask anything about Guildford’s past. The evening will also make aware of the plans for Guildford Museum, so you can have you say about that as well.

Matthew Alexander was formerly curator of Guildford Museum, Dragon NEWS writer David Rose has written and sold more books on the town’s history than anyone else, Mary was the collections officer at Guildford Museum, David Calow is a leading light of the Surrey Archeological Society while Martin Giles has co-authored three books with David Rose and has completed three local history courses at Guildford Museum under Matthew’s expert tuition.

The evening is being organised by the Guildford Dragon NEWS and is being hosted by the Facebook group Guildford Past & Present, run by Ben Darnton of Ben’s Collectors Records, and the Keep pub.

Get there early to ensure you get a seat.

I hope it was an enjoyable evening for all.

I love history increasingly focusing on local residential architectural history and finding out about the people that built them and the people that lived in them and visited them! Do you hold these at regular intervals?

I was planning on getting there last night there I would have loved to have gone. But I was under the influence of a general anaesthetic (courtesy of the day surgery unit at RSCH. By the way, a massive vote of confidence for all the staff working in this unit for their welcoming, friendly and professional manner. Such a positive experience in spite of needing an op! Five stars to them all. The attitude of the staff and volunteers is second to none).

P.S. I came across an interesting piece of local history the other day which may make an interesting quiz question?

Which house did the illustrator of Christopher Robins 100 acre wood and Pooh sticks bridge visit in the St Catherine’s Village when he was a little boy? And who owned it?

Editor’s note: Please do submit your answers to Adele’s topical question. Re. Guildford History Question Time – well there was a good turnout again and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Plus £60 was raised for the Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund. I hope you can make it next time, perhaps in the new year.

I don’t know the answer to Adele’s second question (re E H Shepard) but as to her first – yes, it was an extremely enjoyable evening for everyone.

The panel and the chairman were very knowledgeable, as were indeed several members of the audience, all were lively, the atmosphere was convivial and we came away better-informed and well entertained.

I’m looking forward to the next one!

In 1871, 1881 and 1891 there was a family named Shepard living in Guildown House.

Looking at Ancestry.com EH’s father appears to have been one Henry D, an 1851 census shows HD had a brother Richard J and the occupant of Guildown House mentioned in my previous reply was Richard J.
