Penelope Keith
By Isabelle Trubshaw
Dame Penelope Keith, best known for her roles in The Good Life and To the Manor Born, has died aged 86 at her home in Milford.
The actress passed away peacefully in her home of 50 years, following a diagnosis of cancer.
Born in Surrey, Dame Penelope became a much-loved figure in Guildford’s community. She made her first appearance at The Yvonne Arnaud in its 1966 production of Dear Charles and went to enjoy a long association with the theatre.
Throughout her career, Penelope remained an advocate of the theatre’s work, becoming a Patron in 2006.

She also played a key role in the development of “The Arnaud”, helping its re-opening following the Covid pandemic in 2020.
Well into her 80s, the actress continued to perform on the Guildford stage, appearing in the Arnaud’s first post-Covid production of Theatrical Dig, and most recently in the theatre’s 60th Birthday Celebrations last September.
A spokesperson for the Yvonne Arnaud said, “Penny has been the most incredible, energetic, supportive ambassador for the theatre over the years, generously giving her time and invaluable insight, championing our fundraising campaigns to ensure the theatre thrived.”

“She was a regular face at the theatre, including Boxing Day trips to panto with the family, and was loved by audiences and by us alike. Her warmth, dry sense of humour and boundless energy will be greatly missed,” they added.
The actress was a made a dame in 2014 for services to the arts and charity.
Broadcaster and local legend, Peter Gordon, described Penelope as “loyal and determined ally”, as he paid tribute to his colleague.
Recalling their time together working at the Yvonne Arnaud and Surrey Agricultural Society, where he was her deputy during her Presidential Year, he said: “It was such a privilege to have known Penny. She loved Surrey. Penny was a loyal and determined ally. She was great to have on your side. A lovely person and a true professional.
Sir Jeremy Hunt, MP for Godalming and Ash and former culture secretary posted: “Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Dame Penelope Keith CBE. She was a neighbour and friend where she was dearly loved by all who knew her in Milford.”
He added, “She helped Britain laugh at itself, one of our best national qualities, and brought happiness to millions. RIP dear Penny.”
